Yield results and plot data were very erratic this year, making it difficult to find reliable information to base variety decisions for next year. We recommend you chose the brands and companies you trust. Don’t limit your success for 2012 by making emotional decisions based on 2011 yields. The chances of experiencing another growing season like this past year are low. We believe we represent the brands that will consistently yield you the greatest return. Buy the best inputs for your farm, though they may not always be the cheapest alternatives. Convenience is great, but not at the expense of reduced return. Remember to spread your risk by choosing a variety of products that reduce your overall exposure to the uncertainty of production conditions we will encounter. Focusing solely on hybrids and varieties that excelled in 2011 without considering their history of performance may prove to be a costly decision. Consider how much different results were in areas that received a timely rainfall or two.
Going into 2012 there are challenges that may not have been in the fore front in past years. American Farmers are expected to regulate themselves through best management practices when it comes to fertilization. The use of nitrogen inhibitors, applying the proper rate, considering split applications and soil testing play an integral role in achieving this. Another challenge is the recent on slot of weed resistance in many areas. This is an issue that is here and will require major changes in management practices to resolve. Please contact your Van Horn Agronomist to plan and prepare for a successful 2012 growing season.
